Cell Mates Head For Hy Way

A Neck-and-neck battle is being fought between Audi and Volkswagen to take fuel cell engines to new levels. Both have revealed for the first time they're working on hydrogen-powered cars.

21st October 2004

Audi's is an A2 with a 147bhp electric motor, which uses compressed hydrogen stored in a tank in the boot. The car was unveiled at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum 'future power' event in Shanghai, China. Also there was VW's Touran-based

Hy Motion. It has a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 87mph. Even though both firms are part of the VW Group, the projects are being developed by separate teams.
Meanwhile, Ford debuted what it claims is the world's cleanest internal combustion engine. It's H-powered with near-zero CO2 emissions, and could be available in less than two years.
