Based on the Vignale concept that appeared at September's Paris Motor Show, the Focus CC will boast the firm's first folding hard-top, adding some glamour to the range. However, those who hoped the show car's radical styling and chrome touches would make it into production will be disappointed.
Instead, Ford has toned down the topless model and given it a far more conservative look.
Set to take on machines such as the Peugeot 307 CC and Renault M©gane Coup©-Convertible, the drop-top Focus is based on the three-door hatchback. To accommodate the fully electric roof, the bootlid pivots, so the two-piece lid can be stowed beneath it and leave a flat rear. The whole folding sequence will take less than 30 seconds.
Ford is keen to retain the excellent ride and handling which have become a trademark of the Focus. Extra bracing across the rear will compensate for the loss of a fixed roof, while reinforced windscreen pillars will boost body stiffness, as well as providing protection for occupants in the event of a rollover.
Inside, the CC will ditch the suede and Alcantara materials of the Vignale in favour of a much more standard look, although aluminium trim will be on offer. The standard car's back seats remain, but there will be an inevitable reduction in legroom. However, the roof mechanism has been designed to allow for luggage space, even with the top down.
Mechanically, the CC will pick the best of the Focus engine line-up, with the 1.6-litre Ti-VCT and 2.0-litre Duratec petrol units tipped to be the most popular choices. The 2.0-litre TDCi diesel powerplant could also be offered.
Ford also has the option of creating an ST range-topper - this CC would use the Volvo-sourced 2.5-litre turbo set for the hatch version next year.
With sales expected to start by the end of next year, the Focus CC is likely to make its show debut at September's Frankfurt expo. And it will be competitively priced, with the entry-level model starting at around £18,000, and rising to more than £20,000 for the flagship.
