Coffee Break Advice Proves To Be Froth

Millions of motorists are driving to see family and friends at this time of year. If they follow official Government advice, they'll take a break and drink coffee to help keep them alert - but is that the right thing to do? An Auto Express investigation says not.

The Department for Transport's safety message has been called into question by our researchers. We bought 25 cups of service station coffee and had them scientifically tested for caffeine content. This is the substance that gives you an energy boost, but what we found was shocking - most cuppas don't have enough to make a difference. In one case, you would have to drink a staggering 11 pints to get the required dose to stave off tiredness for two hours.

We believe our survey is the biggest of its kind ever carried out by a motoring magazine. If you are driving any distance this Christmas, it's a report that you can't afford to miss.
