The Santa Fe will be bigger, more driver-oriented and costlier than the current car, with prices expected to start at around £20,000.
It will be based on the platform of the next Sonata, which goes on sale this summer. But unlike the saloon, the Santa Fe will be equipped with switchable four-wheel-drive, sending power to the front wheels most of the time. Electronic sensors will detect when grip is lost, and will redirect power to the tyres with the most traction.
The Santa Fe will also be much more conventionally styled than the current model, which has been criticised for its awkward lines and unusual profile. The nose takes its look from the new Sonata, while the flanks will be a lot cleaner. Part of the move up- market is aimed at attracting customers who want the versatility of a full-size SUV, but can't afford more expensive rivals such as the Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes M-Class.
A seven-seat option will be offered for the first time, too, with a third row of chairs folding into the floor of the boot. In true Hyundai style, the car will also offer high levels of standard equipment, along with the company's excellent five-year warranty. UK sales are expected to start in the spring of 2006.
