Classic Lambo On Way Back

Lamborghini's Espada is making a comeback - no bull! The Italian supercar manufacturer has created a 2+2 coupé design study, which could reach production by 2008, if bosses at parent company Audi give it the green light.

11th January 2005

As with the original Espada, which was introduced in 1968, the new version boasts sweeping lines, large overhangs and a hatchback rear tailgate. However, if the car becomes reality, rather than traditional coup΃© doors it's likely to feature a pillarless system similar to that on the Mazda RX-8.

Underneath the huge bonnet the car will be powered by either the 5.0-litre V10 from the Gallardo or the Murci΃©lago's 6.2-litre V12. With the former it would take on rivals such as the Aston Martin DB9 and Maserati's forthcoming 5000GT. With the latter, it would go head-to-head with Ferrari's 612 Scaglietti. The new Espada is based on the VW Group's new D4 platform, which will form the basis for the next-generation VW Phaeton, Audi A8 and Bentley Arnage. Lamborghini's concept is expected to debut at a motor show later this year.
