GM's Green Revolution Gathers Pace

Elsewhere on GM's Detroit show stand, the Astra Diesel Hybrid revealed the viability of a production dual-power car.

12th January 2005

Combining the 1.7-litre CDTI engine with electric motors, it can give a 25 per cent improvement in economy over the standard oil-burner, with better performance, too.

The hybrid technology also works in larger vehicles, such as the GMC Graphyte (image). A full-sized SUV, the car features a 5.3-litre petrol V8, again linked to electric motors to improve fuel use by the same margin. The system will appear in the 2007 GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs in America.

The final concept revealed was the Sequel, which represents GM's attempts to refine its most innovative technologies for production. Using fuel-cell power, it can deliver spectacular economy and performance, with cost the only barrier. GM aims to sell a fuel-cell vehicle priced on a par with a conventional car by 2010.
