Mondeo's American Twin Backs Into View

To prove that Ford still makes some sensible cars, bosses also unveiled the Fusion saloon at the US exhibition. First spied by Auto Express in issue 837, the new four-door model is set to share its underpinnings with the next-generation Mondeo.

12th January 2005

Seen here from the rear for the first time, the Fusion is similar in style to the British fleet favourite, with a strong stance but a conservative look overall. The new model is intended specifically for the US, where it will be marketed as a compact car.

Ford insiders reckon the Fusion - not to be confused with the blue oval's slow-selling supermini-MPV of the same name - doesn't reflect the look of the next Mondeo, due in 2007. The good news is that the all-new car is said to feature a far more radical design in a bid to take on Vauxhall's restyled Vectra, previewed on Page 8.
