Transport Site On Go-slow

A UK website claiming to be a world first in delivering travel information has been launched - but already a Government minister is warning people not to expect too much too soon.

12th January 2005

The page, located at www.transportdirect.info has live traffic news and route-planning software, plus data on trains, planes and coaches. Users can see the likelihood of delays, and check out different routes. Transport Secretary Alistair Darling said: "For the first time, travellers will be able to view the various travel choices all in one place." Yet bizarrely, he added: "Of course, there will be teething problems, but increasingly Transport Direct will bring huge benefits."

The ΂£16.7million site incorporates 27million addresses, 330,000 bus stops and three million road junctions. There are plans to add cycle routes and car parks, cost comparisons and the ability to select certain travel preferences.
