Esprit's Red-letter Day?

Are you ready to make a date with the future of Lotus? These amazing pictures are taken from the British sports car firm's 2005 calendar, and show design sketches which have never before been revealed to the public.

While some models featured on the calendar look familiar, others are entirely new - including February's sensational view of a striking yellow sportster labelled Esprit. Other notable designs include the Lamborghini-like supercar shown on the June page, and the long-nosed retro two-door for August. So can we expect these mouth-watering new cars to appear later this year? Or ever? A Lotus spokesman told Auto Express: "For this calendar, we decided to publish a number of design sketches for models of the past and the present.

"There are also a few drawings for cars which have been proposed for future Lotus models. But we were never going to give away all our secrets, so the new models seen here are designs we've decided not to go ahead with."

He added that none of the styling cues shown will be carried over on to future machines. However, it's known that designers are still working hard on new cars which will make it into dealerships. The first model likely to appear is a mid-sized coup΃©, due in 2006 - but it's the next Esprit many enthusiasts will be looking forward to most. The new Lotus flagship will feature a 3.5-litre V6 engine and is said to be pencilled in for a 2007 launch.

With technical drawings and full-colour elevations, the calendar is a treat for any Lotus fan. And the good news is that you can buy one from www.lotuscarswebstore.co.uk for ΂£24.99.
