Hot New Chrysler Is Fired Up

All guns blazing! That's how Chrysler came out at this week's Detroit Motor Show, unveiling a raft of new cars. But it was the company's stunning Firepower that really blew visitors away.

Based on the Dodge Viper, the two-seater supercar is powered by a hi-tech 6.1-litre V8. With an estimated 425bhp on tap, the rear-wheel-drive machine is expected to hit 60mph from a standstill in around four seconds, and go on to a top speed of more than 180mph.

Despite its huge punch, the Firepower is not a stripped-out racer. It's a GT with a luxurious cabin featuring leather and chrome, while a full-length glass roof gives the cockpit an airy feel.

Also at the US expo was the Jeep Gladiator, a rugged and practical pick-up which hints at how the next Wrangler will look. Described by the maker as a 'Flexible Utility Truck', it boasts an open-air canvas top, expandable load space and stowable rear seat.

Leading the firm's assault on the muscle car market was the new Dodge Charger, a model made famous by the cult Eighties TV series, The Dukes of Hazzard. The size of a Mercedes S-Class, the newcomer blends aggressive coup΃© looks with four-door practicality.

Inside, the cabin features a two-tone colour scheme with brushed aluminium inserts. The Charger will be offered with two engines - a 250bhp 3.5-litre V6 or the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 with 340bhp.

The final car in the Chrysler Group's arsenal was the Dodge Magnum SRT-8. This sports tourer is powered by the same V8 unit that's in the Firepower, and has similar performance credentials.
