Take A Hot Seat On A CARousel

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin. This unlikely looking car is one of the hottest new projects at GM, and it's expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

12th January 2005

Developed with Italian stylist Bertone, the CARousel is a skateboard-style chassis on to which different bodyshells could be bolted. Called a working demonstration tool for engineers rather than a concept, it represents the latest interior design thinking. It's also a development of the Hy-Wire prototype revealed at Detroit in 2002.

Seats are mounted in pairs on a turntable, so the whole cabin layout can be altered. If the driver is alone, the base rotates through 90 degrees to allow them to sit in the middle, improving their view of the road ahead. If travelling overseas, the car could be changed from right to left-hand drive. The seats also offer a choice of futuristic joystick or steering wheel control.
