These official pictures of Subaru's first seven-seater SUV reveal many things - but one aspect stands out. Bosses are serious about maintaining the controversial design direction that debuted with the B11S concept at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003.

This is the B9 Tribeca, which was unveiled at this week's Detroit Motor Show and is aimed at America's lucrative SUV market. It's based on a revised version of the AWD Legacy platform, although it will feature a redesigned rear suspension set-up to boost passenger space.

The Subaru will be powered by that car's 250bhp 3.0-litre engine, coupled with a five-speed auto box. Inside, an upmarket interior - also inspired by the design of its stablemate - offers a mix of leather and metal-effect trim. At the front there's a stylish chrome grille, and the car rides on 18-inch wheels.

The Tribeca is expected to arrive in the US in the autumn, but sales in the UK have yet to be confirmed. However, top brass here are reportedly keen on importing the model.
