Nissan Baby Coupe Returns

Here's a Z-car that's sure to be at the front of the queue! This week's Detroit Motor Show saw the rebirth of a legend, as Nissan took the wraps off the new 250Z. It's set to take on Mazda's forthcoming new MX-5 as an affordable high-performance two-seater.

Unveiled as the Azeal, the car gives the best glimpse yet of the future baby sportster. And the dramatic looks pay homage to the original Z, the 240, which was axed by the company in 1974.

The slope of the hatch is distinctive, with strong rear pillars giving a rakish look. Some of the more extreme detailing may be toned down, but the muscular appearance will certainly make it through to the production version.

Boosted by the success of the bigger 350Z coup΃©, the final roadgoing model will take its public bow later this year. The newcomer will use platform technology engineered with Renault. That will ensure a stiff chassis, combined with a well honed suspension, to provide excellent handling and a fun drive. The same floorpan will form the basis of a number of compact cars, including the Nissan Almera replacement.

Meanwhile, the 350Z is receiving some extra 'zing' with a new limited- edition model. The GT4 is being built to tie in with the launch of the Gran Turismo 4 racing video game on Sony's PlayStation2, and only 176 examples of the car are being produced. Modifications to the engine have boosted its power output by 20bhp to 296bhp.

The special 350Z is available in Ultra Yellow or Kuro Black, and each model gets electric leather seats, a Bose stereo and a giftbox from Nissan containing a PS2 console and a copy of the game.
