Focus's Red Carpet Treatment

Despite its conservative looks, Ford made the all-new Focus a catwalk star ahead of its showroom launch last weekend. Bosses hailed the arrival of the first customer car - hence the 001 number plates in our picture - as it rolled down the red carpet in London's Berkeley Square.

Managing director Paul Thomas and Roger Putnam, the chairman of Ford of Britain, greeted the 1.6-litre Zetec five-door. This variant is tipped to take nearly a quarter of sales.

Thomas said: "Thirty years ago, Ford invented the family car sector with the Escort. We then redefined it with the original Focus. The new model is vitally important."
