Ford Dares To Fair With Rugged MPV

Resembling a cross between a Range Rover and the all-new Discovery, the Fairlane gave Detroit showgoers a glimpse of a future Ford.

19th January 2005

Bosses said it previews a new type of car that combines SUV looks with MPV practicality. The luxurious cabin features three rows of two seats, with barn-style doors for improved access and an industry-first three-way opening tailgate, with hinges at the top and both sides.

Meanwhile, Auto Express has learned of Ford's plans for the two big European motor shows of 2005. At Geneva - only six weeks away - it will unveil the SAV5 concept, a Mondeo-based crossover SUV. It's based on a stretched Focus platform, and will sell for around ΂£1,000 more than a standard Mondeo estate when it goes on sale next spring.

At September's Frankfurt event, the Galaxy replacement will make its debut. Codenamed CD340, the MPV signals a move upmarket for Ford, and will target Renault's Espace. Adaptive cruise control and emergency brake assist are set to feature.

Inside, the newcomer's layout promises to be more flexible than the current Galaxy's, with stowable rear seats highly likely.
