Original Golf Tees Off Again

Here's a blast from the past! Fans of the Volkswagen Golf can now buy a brand new version of the original model, which first went on sale in 1974.

19th January 2005

A Gloucestershire company is selling the hatchback, and because it comes from South Africa it's right-hand drive. The first batch of cars is on its way here now, and Jason Jones of Rangeworthy-based Beetles UK - the man behind the initiative - can't wait for it to arrive. "VW offered us the chance to sell the Golf as we already import the Type II camper van from Brazil," he said.

There are three different five-door models available, all factory fresh. Each version benefits from updated interiors and modern switchgear, while body-coloured bumpers improve the car's exterior appearance.

Prices start at ΂£9,505 for the 1.4i, while a 1.6 model weighs in at ΂£9,705. Topping the range is the 1.6 Sport, which shares its 100bhp engine with the mid-spec car. Costing ΂£10,205, the flagship Golf is set apart from the other variants by lowered suspension, twin exhausts and smoked tail-light lenses, while inside it's equipped with sports seats and a CD player as standard.
