Gripping Safety Advance

Closer to the action than ever before - that's the theory behind sensors in the next generation of vehicle stability control (ESP) systems. Developed by tyre firm Yokohama and to be unveiled in Germany in February, they're fitted directly on the wheel rim.

Engineers say it means the four units are taking exact measurements about road conditions from only millimetres away. They claim it will only cut in to help the driver when absolutely necessary.
