Curvy New Passat

Exclusive images in this week's mag reveal the curvy new looks of the VW Passat estate. The current version is boxy - particularly at the back - but this one has a right rounded rear!

The replacement load-lugger will appear at September's Frankfurt Motor Show and go on sale soon after. It follows on from the Passat saloon - officially seen already, but set to make its public debut at March's Geneva event.

The mag's image clearly illustrates how the estate will share the same chiselled front end and Audi-like sides. But at the rear, it will take on a new look, with a high roof creating a boot to rival that of class leaders such as the Vauxhall Vectra load-lugger and Honda Accord Tourer.

Volkswagen is hoping to move the Passat further upmarket than its competitors, particularly inside. The saloon's neatly detailed dashboard and understated trim options are carried over to the estate. In the rear, a pop-up shield will protect passengers from flying luggage in the event of an accident.

As well as cabin styling, the estate will borrow a number of innovations from the saloon, including an electronic parking brake, keyless entry and adaptive cruise control. Of particular interest to buyers will be the latest stability-control programme. It will have a function to reduce trailer-snaking for those who tow caravans or heavy loads. Engine choices for the load-lugger are expected to include normally aspirated and turbocharged versions of VW's 2.0-litre FSI petrol unit.

There will also be 1.9 and 2.0 TDI diesels, as featured in models such as the VW Golf and Audi A4. In addition, an all-wheel-drive 4MOTION-badged car is anticipated, along with a flagship V6.

The all-new estate is expected to cost around ΂£1,000 more than the saloon, with the entry-level machine tipped to be priced at approximately ΂£17,000.
