Lollipop Patrols Given A Licking

Wanted - 9,000 lollipop staff with thick skins and nerves of steel. A quarter of school crossing patrol vacancies remain unfilled because volunteers are put off by abuse from motorists and pedestrians.

Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association chairman Steve Whitehouse said: "Young mums or the retired - who make up most patrols - are deterred by verbal abuse."

By law, drivers must stop for lollipop men and women. However, crossing patrols were involved in 100 accidents last year.
