You Must Be skidding!

Locking up your brakes used to be a bad thing - that's why ABS was invented - but now boffins are having second thoughts. After studying the effect of friction on atoms, scientist Peter Reimann of Bielefeld University, Germany, believes allowing a car to skid a little could improve its stopping distance.
