Meanwhile, cars which automatically dial the emergency services after a smash will be a reality by 2009. That's when the European Commission wants a hi-tech device, dubbed eCall, to be fitted to all new motors. The system also gives the crash location, and has been agreed in principle by vehicle makers, governments and emergency services.
