But if you think that sounds expensive, Auto Express can reveal UK motorists paid ΂£110million-plus in speeding fines last year. The shocking figure is revealed in Britain's first-ever official guide to where the cameras are sited, free with this issue.

It comes amid claims that speeding has hit epidemic levels. RAC figures show fifty-five per cent of drivers admit to breaking the law - up 10 per cent on this time last year. And motorists had better watch out, if scientists at the Transport Research Laboratory get their way. In a report for the Department for Transport, it has recommended lowering the national speed limit to 50mph on most single-carriageway A and B roads.

The move would prevent up to a quarter of accidents without adding significantly to journey times. The TRL said minor country routes should have limits no higher than 40mph.
