Crossing Girl Sends Out Right Signals

A long-haired girl in a short skirt is helping people cross roads more safely - and her appeal is spreading.

22nd February 2005

She features on a new design for pedestrian crossings, which is on a three-month trial in the German town of Zwickau. There is also a red-light version, with arms spread wide to stop people crossing. Designers from local firm Signal Technology Rossberg claim the figure is a safer alternative to the classic male design, because more people notice her. They also reckon her curvy shape allows more light to shine through.

The figure has been a huge hit with motorists and pedestrians, and several other German highway authorities, as well as some in Holland, have approved the design for use with their traffic lights.
