The first manufacturer in Britain to publicly commit to taking back cars when they're no longer roadworthy is Ford.

The deal with a recycling firm means the last owner of all Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Aston Martin and Mazda models can dispose of their vehicles in an environmentally friendly way for free from January 2007. New rules across Europe mean that all car makers have to develop a similar system.
MG Rover has signed up for a similar deal with Cartakeback.
