That's £1,200 less than the UK price of the equivalent outgoing model. A range-topper costs about £18,000 in its native country, but it's likely to be more expensive when it arrives here in November.
Meanwhile, the firm has revealed another Golf model - the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive version. Engineers say the 4WD system is faster-acting, quieter and more compact than on the MkIV car. It's available to order now, with a choice of two 2.0-litre GT engines, an FSI 150 petrol unit or a TDI 140 diesel powerplant.
