One of motoring's most famous engines is being axed. Alfa Romeo owner Fiat is to end production of its V6, which was first used in 1979 in the Alfa Six and is still found - albeit in a more modern form - in current models.

The move is being blamed on emissions regulations, which the unit can't meet. Future flagship cars will use a GM-sourced powerplant, with the firm's Arese engine factory near Milan set to close.
