We Lift Lid On Jag's Soft-top Secret

It might be a big cat, but it's a real softie at heart. Exclusive shots in this week's mag prove Jaguar's next XK will have a canvas hood, rather than a retractable metal roof. Our spies spotted the car testing in South Africa, and - unlike some secret prototypes - it couldn't have been easier to track down. Just check out that large sticker on the boot!

There was speculation that Jaguar might copy rival models such as the Mercedes SL in introducing a folding hard-top. But our sources say that idea has been shelved in the move to bring forward production and bolster the firm's ailing image.

As with the coup΃©, the convertible will get a choice of normally aspirated or supercharged 4.2-litre V8 engines, in two trims. Based on a modified version of the aluminium XJ's chassis, the new model will be lighter and more nimble than at present. All variants will feed power to the rear wheels through a six- speed auto transmission, and the flagship XKR is expected to sprint from 0-60mph in five seconds.

Set to debut at September's Frankfurt Motor Show, the drop-top and coup΃© will go on sale next year.

Meanwhile, Jaguar used the Geneva Motor Show to unveil a new special edition of the current XK, the 4.2 S. Standard cabin upgrades - such as the Bluetooth wireless communication system - were previously available only as options. The 4.2 S is on sale now in either coup΃© or convertible form.
