Even with one less turbocharger, the other new Merc superdiesel is just as impressive on paper. The SL400 CDI uses a redesigned 4.0-litre V8 to produce 311bhp and 730Nm of torque. The luxurious drop-top can sprint from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds - quicker than the petrol-powered SL500.
Built to celebrate 70 years of Mercedes diesel cars, the duo made their debuts at the Geneva Motor Show. The oil-burning drop-tops wear the Vision badge, which the German firm tags on to all of its concept cars. However, less powerful versions of the V6 and V8 diesel units are soon to be introduced across the three-pointed star line-up. Little work would be required to put the drop-top newcomers into production.
Elsewhere on Mercedes' stand, the B-Class compact MPV was displayed for the first time. It goes on sale in Britain in October. Also in Geneva was a hydrogen-powered fuel cell version, which the firm hopes to have in showrooms by 2010. Meanwhile, bosses revealed that the R-Class - the company's luxury people carrier - will make its official debut at the New York Motor Show later this month.
