Fiat Caught Cold On New SUV

Sometimes disguised development cars can be difficult to identify - but there was no problem working out what this model was when our spies spotted it testing near the Arctic Circle.

A sticker in the windscreen told us all we needed to know. This is a 1.9-litre JTD version of Fiat's top-secret SUV, which is set to hit British showrooms next year.

The car is part of a joint venture with Japanese manufacturer Suzuki, and will form the basis for two Toyota RAV4-sized off-roaders. They are set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, before going on sale in about 12 months' time.

And although the styling of this example is typically Fiat, with its Stilo-style profile, Croma rear end and mesh front grille, Suzuki's influence can clearly be seen in the cabin - the ventilation controls, stereo system and dials are very similar to those found in the Japanese firm's Liana budget hatchback.
The images also show the raised ride height of the newcomer, along with the plastic lower body cladding similar to that seen on the Panda 4x4.

Both manufacturers will each bring their own expertise to the project; the Italian giant is supplying its respected JTD diesel engines and a punchy 2.0-litre petrol unit, while Suzuki has its mammoth experience in the field of off-road technology to call upon.

The car is critical for both companies, as it allows Fiat to enter uncharted waters and gives Suzuki the chance to sell a more road-oriented and refined SUV than the Grand Vitara.
