Extra Airbags Could Mean Curtains For Passenger Injuries

More new cars should come with life-saving side curtain airbags as standard, according to the boss of Euro NCAP. The crash test authority's Adrian Hobbs said: "There's a real drive coming from us for manufacturers to fit these to more of their models. As front airbags are now virtually universal, the curtain types will follow soon."

This follows a study by America's Institute for Highway Safety. It found occupants of small cars without curtain airbags were vulnerable in side impacts. Hobbs explained protection was more difficult in such smashes, but that curtain airbags were one of the best methods available.

Meanwhile, Euro NCAP is set to include primary safety devices - those which prevent accidents happening, such as stability control - in its star ratings. This could involve testing different systems or simply awarding points if they are fitted.
