The Orkney islands could be connected to the Scottish mainland by a £100million tunnel, under a new proposal. If it is given the go-ahead, the link would replace the current hour-long ferry trip with a 10-minute drive.

Most of the islands' inhabitants back the idea, and more than 20 similar tunnels have been built in Scandinavia. Supporters claim the route would be cheaper than ferries, reverse depopulation of the Orkneys and make the area more economically viable.
