VW Revives GTD Badge On Hot Golf Diesel

The Crossgolf is not the only voyage into uncharted waters being plotted by VW. Bosses are also planning a new flagship diesel model that will be the most powerful oil-burning Golf ever.

Insiders at Volkswagen have confirmed the car will be designed to offer the sporty appeal of the petrol-engined GTI, but in a more economical package. Under the bonnet will be a 168bhp version of the Golf's existing 2.0-litre TDI powerplant, and the car will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

Although the newcomer may be called the GT TDI, as with the current 138bhp diesel variant, we've heard marketing bosses could resurrect the GTD badge, last used in 1991 on the Golf MkII. The model will feature many of the chassis enhancements that have rocketed the GTI back to the top of the hot hatch class, and will also inherit the petrol variant's styling cues, with retro alloy wheels and a distinctive black grille creating a sporty look.

What's more, it will be the most powerful oil-burner in its class. Judging by the success of the diesel Skoda Fabia vRS, this could extend the Golf's appeal to cost-conscious buyers.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen has fleshed out the details for the final specification of the new high-performance flagship Golf, to replace the R32. The range-topper will feature a 3.2-litre V6 engine and feed a mighty 247bhp via the firm's 4MOTION transmission to provide maximum traction.
