Although the newcomer may be called the GT TDI, as with the current 138bhp diesel variant, we've heard marketing bosses could resurrect the GTD badge, last used in 1991 on the Golf MkII. The model will feature many of the chassis enhancements that have rocketed the GTI back to the top of the hot hatch class, and will also inherit the petrol variant's styling cues, with retro alloy wheels and a distinctive black grille creating a sporty look.
What's more, it will be the most powerful oil-burner in its class. Judging by the success of the diesel Skoda Fabia vRS, this could extend the Golf's appeal to cost-conscious buyers.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen has fleshed out the details for the final specification of the new high-performance flagship Golf, to replace the R32. The range-topper will feature a 3.2-litre V6 engine and feed a mighty 247bhp via the firm's 4MOTION transmission to provide maximum traction.
