StreetCar Aims To Kick Out The Jams

This is the latest attempt to get drivers to swap to public transport. A cross between a bus and a tram, the service is to be known as FTR - short for future - and the vehicle is called the StreetCar. At nearly 20 metres long, the £320,000 machines run on dedicated road space and can turn red traffic lights green.

The system has been developed by bus operator First, and aims to cut car use by 10 per cent. It will be tested in York, with Sheffield and Leeds getting fleets after.
