Jeep Set Take Command

The styling might look like a throwback to the Eighties, but this is Jeep's latest assault on the SUV market. And the new Commander has the Land Rover Discovery directly in its sights.

The upright windscreen and angular lines are part of the firm's traditional look, but it's all change inside. For the first time on a Jeep there are three rows of chairs, making it a full seven-seater.

Both rear sets fold into the floor, and each row is set slightly higher than the one in front. A conventional sunroof, plus a pair of skylights, create an airy cabin, while exposed bolt heads on the dashboard give the interior a rugged look.

There's underbody protection for off-roading, and three versions of the firm's Quadra-Trac four-wheel-drive system will be available for different types of motoring. The Commander is set to go on sale alongside the Grand Cherokee, hitting UK dealers in right-hand drive next year.

Vehicles sold in the US will come with a choice of three petrol engines: a 210bhp 3.7-litre V6, plus a pair of V8 units. Expect a diesel alternative for Europe, with the 2.7-litre CRD from the Grand Cherokee a potential option. Prices have yet to be announced.
