A6 Scales Heights In Grip Show

Car companies will go to some extreme lengths to prove what their vehicles can do - and here's the latest example.

23rd March 2005

This A6 quattro was driven 47 metres up a snow-covered ski ramp at Pitk΃¤vuori, Finland. The stunt was for a TV advert to mark the 25th anniversary of the firm's legendary all-wheel-drive system - but sadly it won't be aired in the UK.

It's not the first time Audi has done this; 14 years ago, a 100CS drove up the same 80 per cent gradient. And while the A6 hurtled up the slope in only nine seconds, thanks to its spiked tyres, engineers faced problems keeping the car stationary at the summit. A sledge-like steel base-plate was constructed to prevent the saloon from sliding backwards.

And if you think the stunt was a fluke, think again. Engineer Uwe Bleck completed the process 11 times during filming!
