Unmanned Fuel Stations Open

Oil giant Shell has opened Europe's first totally unmanned filling stations. The sites in Finland, France and Holland are identical to the 'pay at the pump' systems on some UK forecourts. Drivers insert their credit or debit card, the details are read and authorised, then fuel is dispensed.

The filling stations are going under the brand name Shell Express - but not all customers are in favour. Critics say there is nobody to talk to face-to-face if things go wrong, and it's thought the large underground storage tanks could be targeted by thieves, who'd sell the fuel on the black market.
A Shell spokeswoman told Auto Express there were currently no plans to introduce unmanned sites in Britain.
