THE first car with the name Barchetta - meaning little boat - was the 1947 Ferrari 166. In 1953, the Arno XI set a world speedboat record of 151mph using a Ferrari V12.

BOSSES at Rover secured the rights to Buick's V8 in 1965 after discovering the engine at Mercury Marine in Wisconsin, USA. It had been rejected as a boat motor.

ONE of the few companies to sell cars and boats was British maker Healey. Its launches were popular from the Fifties to the Seventies.

FERRUCCIO Lamborghini commissioned boat maker Riva in 1969 to build a craft powered by two of his V12 engines. In 1983, the car firm launched its own speedboat with a pair of 8.0-litre V12s.
