Lexus And Ford Lead The Stars In New York...

One car, two world firsts - that was the claim from Lexus bosses at the New York Motor Show. The GS450h is based on the all-new GS that goes on sale here next month, but with a crucial difference relating to how it's powered.

The 'h' stands for hybrid, which makes this car the first petrol/electric luxury saloon and the first vehicle using the eco-friendly system to be front engine and rear-wheel drive.

Based on a development of Toyota's dual-fuel technology that has made the Prius such a hit, the GS has a 3.5-litre V6. An electric motor works in tandem and boosts power to more than 300bhp, delivering a 0-60mph sprint time of less than six seconds. "This proves to us that hybrid powertrains can work in virtually any car," explained Mark Templin, vice-president of marketing at Lexus America.

However, it's in the mid-range where acceleration is most impressive. That's because the electric motor delivers maximum torque instantly, making overtaking quicker and safer than ever. The 450h goes on sale in America next year, and will come to the UK in 2007. As there's not going to be a diesel GS, Lexus sees the hybrid as the sensible alternative. But the technology is not for DIYers, as under the bonnet a plastic cover hides all but the top of the power unit and some red piping.
