New Big Lexus Makes An Impact

It's not on sale until later this month, but already it's top of the class. The Lexus GS300 is number one in the executive sector for crash performance, after scoring a 100 per cent score for side impact protection in the latest Euro NCAP tests. It was the best in its sector in the frontal collision assessment, too, and earned a five-star rating overall.

06th April 2005

The Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class, Renault Vel Satis and Saab 9-5 have all been awarded the maximum score in the executive segment - but the GS300's points tally marks it out as the best. Thanks to careful styling of the front bumper and bonnet, the Lexus has beaten its rivals for pedestrian safety, too. It gained two stars for the protection provided - a feat only matched by the Saab 9-5 in the class.

The GS, which hits showrooms on 15 April, also gained a four-star rating for child protection in the tests. Advanced features include 12 airbags and Pre-Crash Safety (PCS), which automatically adjusts front seatbelt tension and applies emergency braking to reduce the impact of a collision.
