Warning Signs Are An Ice Idea

Signs like this could become a familiar sight if trials are a success. The Ice Alert system (image) warns drivers of freezing conditions by changing colour as the temperature drops. Above two degrees centigrade, the fan-like disc is white. But as the potential for ice increases, the blades change to blue, alerting motorists to the hazards.

Kent-based businessman Steve Jackman is importing the US-made signs. "Lincolnshire County Council is trialling 40 units on a section of twisty road," he told us.

The clever warnings are also being used to caution pedestrians of any slippery surfaces in Birmingham car parks, and along mountain roads on the Isle of Man.
