New XK On Location

Exclusive images in this week's mag reveal Jaguar's undisguised XK, a showroom-ready model caught on an official photoshoot for the newcomer's brochure and promotional pictures. The new XK took centre stage as the mag's snapper turned up and shot a roll of film of his own.

The mag can also reveal the latest spy shots of the XK convertible, along with news of the firm's eagerly anticipated SUV. Top of the bill is the all-new coup΃©. When Jaguar said the final production version would stick closely to the appear- ance of the ALC concept unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in January, it meant every word. Designers have produced one of the most attractive new models of the decade.

At the front, the most striking feature is the traditional oval-shaped Jaguar grille. This is flanked by distinctive headlamps with intricate lens details to give an instantly recognisable face.The biggest surprise comes at the rear. Unlike the current model, the next- generation XK will be a hatchback,
giving greater practicality. Along with the shutline around the tailgate, these pictures also reveal the beautifully detailed tail-lights, which are linked by a Jaguar-badged chrome strip.

In profile, the new XK bears more than a passing resemblance to its sister supercoup΃© - the Aston Martin DB9. Both firms are owned by Ford, but while the Aston is a fully fledged supercar, the Jaguar will be priced at a similar level to its predecessor. It's thought that base versions of the XK will cost around ΂£60,000. As with the current model, the XK will be available in two V8 guises. Both will have 4.2-litre powerplants, but the entry-level naturally aspirated model will be badged XK8, while the supercharged variant will get the XKR tag. The cheaper version will develop 300bhp, with 400bhp on offer from the flagship.

Based on the same platform as the XJ saloon, the coup΃© benefits from a lightweight aluminium chassis which not only provides excellent rigidity but will also allow swift performance. Both variants will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with UK models arriving early in 2006.
