Passat Supercoupe On Way

Auto Express has learned Volkswagen engineers are now working hard on a sporty new two-door Passat to boost the car's appeal - and have the images in this week's issue to prove it.

There's been no genuine coup΃© in the VW line-up since the Corrado was scrapped in 1996. However, this exclusive image shows the luxurious machine which will sit right at the top of the range with the flagship Phaeton.

Clearly based on the Passat and using the same platform, the car has smooth but aggressive lines. The rear overhang has been shortened, reducing the overall length. Styling cues from the Concept C convertible - which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last year - are also clearly visible in the front lights, grille and spoiler.

And it's not the only big coup΃© in development. Rumours of a four-door indicate bosses are keen to investigate the niche market created by Mercedes' CLS. Engine options have yet to be finalised, but the car seen here is likely to have the Golf GTI's 2.0-litre FSI petrol unit at entry level. Expect a line-up of more powerful petrol motors, including a V6 range-topper.

A high-performance variant of the 3.0-litre TDI oil-burner is set to complete the range. The 4MOTION all-wheel drive and the slick clutchless manual DSG system are anticipated to be available on some models. While the Passat coup΃© isn't tipped to be unveiled until 2007, it's aimed at boosting VW's move upmarket. However, with sales of the Phaeton failing to hit the hoped-for levels, time will tell whether this is a strategy customers will support.
