Open-air Golf Still On Course

Exclusive images in this week's mag give the best indication yet of VW's forthcoming Golf-based convertible, which will complete the line-up and give the range a large dose of style. With a competent chassis and powerful engines, the cabriolet promises to deliver an impressive drive, as well as being stunning to look at.

Based on the Concept C from the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, the new drop-top has recognisable elements from the Golf - notably the back lights and strong line down the flanks. But they're combined with a sleeker bodyshell, stretched tail and flat rear deck. That's to create sufficient storage for the folding hard-top - a must-have in this sector. With the roof up, the car will provide VW's usual standards of refinement, but in a matter of seconds the top can be stowed for open-air motoring.

Inside, the newcomer will share much of its dashboard with the conventional hatch, but with unique trim combinations and higher spec levels for a more luxurious feel. Under the bonnet, the car will get the pick of VW's huge engine range. This will include the 2.0-litre FSI turbo from the Golf GTI, as well as the 2.0 TDI. In addition to five and six-speed manual gearboxes, the DSG sequential shifter will also be an option. The car is set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with sales likely to start before the end of the year.
