Storm In A D Cat?

There's a new high-performance diesel engine on the way from Jaguar - and it's going in the X-Type. Auto Express has learned the firm will soon announce plans for a 2.2-litre 152bhp oil-burner to fit into the range above the 2.0-litre. It's the same TDCi motor that's in the Ford Mondeo.

A Jaguar insider told us: "It will arrive in the UK around September, but may not be in time for the 55-reg plate change at the beginning of the month."

Meanwhile, Volvo is getting a new high-powered diesel as well. The 2.4-litre D5 unit will be reworked from 163bhp to 185bhp, and is set to appear in the S60, V70, XC70 and XC90. In the S60, it will mean a 0-60mph time of 8.2 seconds - down from 9.5 seconds in entry-level S models.

There's no word on when the car will make its UK debut yet, but with demand for performance diesels growing, it's likely to be some time next year. To coincide with the launch, particulate filters will become standard across Volvo's derv range.
