Britain's wheel clampers have been laughing all the way to the bank - but not any more. Drivers have paid an estimated £1.7billion in release fees over the past 15 years, according to online car retailer Jamjar. It claims nearly three-quarters of motorists have been made to cough up at some point, with the average release fee £70.

But from this month, private clampers need a Security Industry Authority licence, and failure to have one can mean up to five years in prison. A Jamjar spokeswoman told us: "While motorists have a duty of care to ensure they park safely, some clampers target drivers just to raise revenue."
