Next CL Has Bentley In Its Sights

It's the car Mercedes said might never be built! This week's Auto Express magazine has the world's first pictures of the replacement for the CL supercoupé. It's based on the next-generation S-Class we revealed in Issue 811, and is due to hit the road shortly after that car's launch in 2006. Entry-level editions of the next CL are expected to cost at least £80,000.

10th May 2005

As well as luxurious accommodation for four, the new CL will offer a limited range of engines, including a 5.0-litre V8 and a 5.5 V12. A storming 550bhp twin-turbo AMG unit is also under development.

Aimed directly at the likes of Bentley's Continental GT, the car is described by one insider as the very pinnacle of Mercedes' ability to blend refinement with performance. The company hopes to sell as many as 1,000 models a year in the UK.
