Hot Diesel X-Type Is Go

Two's company for Jaguar - the British manufacturer has confirmed the arrival of a second oil-burner for its X-Type range, just as we predicted in last week's magazine. It means that from later in the year, buyers will have the choice of a new high-performance 2.2-litre turbodiesel, as well as the current 2.0-litre model.

More details have emerged now the move has been given the rubber stamp. The performance figures promise an exciting ride, with the engine developing 152bhp and 400Nm of torque. That should mean decent mid-range acceleration, putting the newcomer among the quickest cars in its class. Ford fans will be familiar with the 2.2-litre motor, as it's the TDCi oil-burner borrowed from the Mondeo. Jaguar managing director Bibiana Boerio said: "Our goal for the new diesel was to deliver more performance than the current 2.0-litre unit, and to improve on all other aspects."

The engine meets Euro IV emissions legislation, and is said to benefit from improved levels of smoothness and performance. That's due to the latest fuel system technology and a new six-speed manual transmission. "The 2.2 gives our customers more of what they want: power, refinement and choice," continued Boerio. The new model will go on sale in September.

Further changes to the X-Type range include fresh body colours, Bluetooth wireless communications technology and a new alloy wheel design.
