Smart Headrests Miss Whiplash

The latest safety innovation from Mercedes won't be a pain in the neck. This new head restraint is designed to prevent whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision.

12th May 2005

Available now as standard-fit on the C-Class, CLK, CLS and E-Class, the Neck-Pro system works by bringing the restraint up and forward by 40mm. It's designed to meet the head and catch it if sensors in the rear bumper detect a severe impact.

Afterwards, the system can be reset to its original position using a special tool. Neck-Pro won't be made available as a retro-fit option, as it is wired in with other safety devices, but bosses say it will appear on other models in the future.
