Clash Of The Pick-up Titans

Giant pick-ups were the big news at the Barcelona Motor Show - Nissan unveiled its Navara King Cab, which is produced in the Spanish city, while rival Toyota took the wraps off a new version of the Hilux.

12th May 2005

Under the bonnet of the Nissan is a 171bhp 2.5-litre diesel engine, which sends power to all four wheels via a choice of six-speed manual or five-ratio automatic gearboxes. A Mazda RX-8-style barn-door layout maximises access to the second row of seats.

The truck will hit showrooms here in August, although the current version will continue to be offered in basic trim. Expect a price premium of ΂£1,000 for the newcomer, meaning the King Cab will start at around ΂£18,500.

Meanwhile, the new Hilux goes on sale in October, with power from a 2.5-litre D-4D diesel engine delivering 102bhp. Buyers will be able to choose from two bodystyles, although the single-cab variant does without the novel four-door set-up of its Nissan rival. Imported versions from Thailand have already appeared in the UK, but vehicles officially destined for Britain will be built to a higher specification.
