Boffins have 'fingered' a new way of making seatbelts safer. Car armrests could be fitted with digit scanners to measure bone density and work out how much to pretension belts.

Nissan is looking at such a device to boost safety. Roger Hardy of Cranfield Impact Centre, Beds, which is developing the unit, said: "Belts can injure people's ribs in a crash due to the lack of give. Our scanner (image) can adjust tension to avoid this."
